As a joint Master of the Pau Hunt I take pleasure
in introducing you to the members and guests and joining
them for a days hunting. visitors can follow the hunt on
horseback or foot. It will prove an interesting day out
for all, followed by a meal in one of the local restaurants.
Enjoy the thrill of the drag hunt or perhaps a day live
fox hunting.
The Pau Hunt was founded
by Lord Oxenden in the year 1814, the officers of the Duke
of Wellington’s army discovered the Bearn area as
they crossed the South West of France travelling form Portugal
and Spain, and a few years later they returned to the area.
Hunting being the preferred sport of Wellington’s
officers, The Pau Hunt was founded to give them something
to do during the period of calm.
The Hunt has retained and maintained
the English style in every way, both in dress and tradition.
During the period before the Second World War, many Englishmen
owned properties in the Pau area that had been members of
the Hunt.
The Pau Hunt is very proud of the famous English and American
Masters from the early days, such as;
The Earl of Howth (1885-1882)
James Gordon Bennett (1880-1882) owner of the NY Tribunal
Sir Victor Brooke (1885-1882)
Frederic Prince (1910-1940)
Some of the Royal Visitors included;
The Duke of Hamilton
H.R.H. The Prince of Wales future Edward VII
H.R.H. The King of Spain Alphonse XIII
With the The Pau Hunt you will enjoy a variety of obstacles
and it is not unusual to take over a hundred ditches, banks
and water obstacles following the drag. The terrain is interesting
and not dissimilar to that of Leicestershire, the territory
being some 100 kilometres long and 30 kilometres wide it
stretches from Dax to Lembey. The members of the Pau hunt
will be pleased to receive you as a guest.
The hunt meets from 1st of November through to 31st
of March |
